Menemsha (for which one meaning is "Still Water") is a small village that
is part of Chilmark It was known as Creekville just before the turn of the
century, and was merely a narrow waterway leading from Vineyard Sound into
Menemsha Pond. An opening was dredged and a stone jetty was erected, which
facilitated it becoming a working fishing port by 1910, and is now the home
of the United States Coast Guard Station, located on a bluff above Menemsha
harbor. It remains much as it was then - An unpretentious community whose
livelihood and inhabitants are deeply connected to the sea.
